Marcelo Ferder, architect, designer, and plastic artist, was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina in 1958. He has lived in the Dominican Republic since 1993, when he became director of product design at the renowned Altos de Chavón School of arts. In 1995, he founded Diseños Mamey, a center dedicated to the design and fabrication of recycled paper products inspired by pre Columbian and Afroamerican iconography. From 1998 to 2000 he created “House Calls,” a plastic arts project in the rural communities of El Limón and Los Arroyos in the province of San José de Ocoa, Dominican Republic, where the towns themselves became the “canvas” on which houses were painted with artistic flair.
